Take a ride in the cab of engine 489 on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad as we travel 26 miles from Antonito, Colorado to Sublette. The view is mostly form the fireman's side so we get to see plenty of the track ahead and watch both the crew members working the engine. We will see the fireman shoveling coal into the firebox, and watch the engineer controlling the locomotive. The ride is a gradual climb from the San Luis Valley in Antonito and we speed along the flats, before working the engine as we gain elevation. You will see the scenery change as well, plus see some of the sights along the way which includes Lava Tank, Whiplash Curve, Big Horn and Sublette where we take water form the railroad's standpipe. There are a few surprises that are unexpected along this remote mountain railroad. You will get to see most of the line from a unique perspective and enjoy the great sound of a steam locomotive at work. 489 is a narrow gauge (3 foot) 2-8-2 and was the last new engine built for the Denver & Rio Grande Western in 1925.
