The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad operates regular seasonal tourist trains daily between Chama, NM and Antonito, CO. In addition there are periodic "Special Trains" that the railroad hosts during the year. During our 10 day visit in 2014 we were able to capture three days of special trains. First is engine 489 powering an Engineer & Fireman School train. Students can take this 4-day course and actually learn all about locomotive and train handling and the trains are operated out on the line. There are some misty mood shots on this train. Next engine 487 powers the 'Advanced Engineer School Train" and these folks will actually switch freight cars along the route and learn more railroading skills. Both of these trains are followed from Chama to Cumbres (10,015 feet elevation). Our final special train in the "Sunset Train" which departs Chama around 5:30 pm and takes riders form Chama to Cumbres for a meal and entertainment. Beautiful sunny weather is the backdrop for the two trains with engine 487. All trains are working hard on the 4% grade to Cumbres along this superb mountain railroad. Unusual steam action with two different engines on a freight train, plus a later than normal passenger train in great light. Also some yard action and special scenes. 87 minutes. Copyright 2015.
